How To Earn Money On Instagram – 6 Ways To Monetize Your Account

Is it really possible for anyone to learn how to earn money on Instagram? Can you really expect to make money off Instagram like people say you can? Yes, yes, and yes again!

Today I will show you all of the different ways that I make money off Instagram and I will explain to you how you can learn how to monetize Instagram too! They include:

  • Affiliate Marketing - (selling different companies' products - think Amazon)
  • Selling ebooks and how-to guides
  • Selling my own products (photo prints)
  • Email list building
  • Being a brand ambassador (free stuff!)
  • Building 100,000's of Instagram followers

How To Earn Money On Instagram 1:
Affiliate Marketing

How To Earn Money On Instagram

The first way to earn money on Instagram is by linking to products from lots of different companies. This is known as affiliate marketing.

Typical affiliate marketing involves selling whatever you like from whichever company you like.

Almost every decent-sized company on earth now has an affiliate program and you just have to join up - normally free. You then get your own, unique affiliate ID for every company you join with, and you use that ID to promote that company's products.

For example, I'm an affiliate with Amazon. So when I do a blog post like this one here on the best beginner DSLR camera, I link to some camera products in the article using my unique Amazon affiliate ID.

If someone clicks on the link and then buys that product from Amazon, I get a percentage of the sale. The great thing about this is that you can link to whatever you want, promote whatever you want, and write about whatever you want.

You're not held to any specific company or product.

How To Earn Money On Instagram

So then you think 'well why wouldn't everyone do that? It's a good question, and I don't know why everyone doesn't.....

I mean, if you're going to recommend something to a friend, or family member, or anyone else, and they go and buy it, why shouldn't you get a slice of the pie? You practically made the sale through your recommendation, right?

One thing that does put people off is that you do need to have your own website. So affiliate marketing is for people who have a website or intend on creating their own website. Amazon (and most other companies) are very strict with their TOS.

You can't put your affiliate links in emails, or on Facebook, or Instagram etc. You must have your own website and comply with the rules.

So in your Instagram bio, for example, you can't link to an Amazon product. Your bio should have your website URL , which has an article that links to an Amazon product.

But that shouldn't put you off, coz setting up your own site is so easy, especially with sites that specialize in helping you do so, like Wealthy Affiliate (pictured below)

So if you want to set up your own website and sell a whole range of products, and have it perfectly tailored for affiliate marketing, then I highly, highly recommend Wealthy Affiliate. You can join for free and the help, support, and features are incredible.

It's literally a one-stop shop for succeeding with affiliate marketing through building your own website. I think it's easily the best internet marketing training for beginners, as it gives you all the training in the world you need to succeed, even if you've never done anything like this before.

In fact, this site here at LTRW is made and optimized through Wealthy Affiliate and all the training I received there. I can't recommend it highly enough.

How To Earn Money On Instagram 2:
E-Books And How-To Guides

how to earn money on instagram

The shot above is from my Instagram e-book guide that I put together. It is over 100 pages of every single method I used to take me from a few hundred followers to 70,000 in 12 months and over 110,000 as of today.

This guide has been incredibly successful and you can see that since March 2017 I have made over $10,000 dollars just from this guide.

At $17 I think it is the best value for money guide on the Internet right now. And from the number of purchases you can see that it is extremely popular and well received.

Let me say again that without followers you cannot make money off Instagram. It's impossible.

So if you are really serious about Instagram and you want to learn how to earn money on Instagram then the first step absolutely is getting followers. That's why my guide is so popular.

How To Earn Money On Instagram 3:
Sell Your Own Product

How To Earn Money On Instagram

This picture here is the income I earn on Instagram from selling my photo prints.

You'll notice that all of the incoming money is in increments of $20. One huge change I made to my business model was that I now only sell prints digitally.

I no longer sell actual hardcopy prints in the form of canvas or metal, or glossy paper etc.

Everything is done digitally and the cost of printing on any surface is worn by the purchaser. I simply send a high definition digital copy of my photo by email once payment has been made.

This allows me to keep my prices down to the $20, $40, $60 mark (depending on how many prints are bought).

Doing it the digital way and not providing actual hardcopy prints has been absolutely massive in me getting money from sales of my photos.

How To Earn Money On Instagram 4:
Teaching List Building

How To Earn Money On Instagram

The two pictures above and below are related to the income I earn from helping people build email lists through Instagram.

List building is massive and is one of the best ways you can earn money online.

Lots of companies try to charge you $100's if not $1,000's for help building lists. But you can do it all for next to nothing on Instagram and I teach people how to do that.

The payments that you can see here come from the information I provide on list building through Instagram.

Free Stuff From Companies

How To Earn Money On Instagram

This last shot is not exactly making money off Instagram. But rather, it is all about getting free stuff from companies.

When you build enough followers and you get a lot of engagement with your followers, companies want to be associated with you.

You can see from this photo that I was sent a watch (2 actually) from Uncle Jack Watches. I kept one myself and gave one to my wife.

I also get free gear from clothing companies and photography related companies. This all comes from having followers so again I strongly urge you to build followers first.

Build Targeted Followers!

How To Earn Money On Instagram

I know I've already said that you need to build followers first, but I'll say it again.

You need to build followers on Instagram first. If you want to learn how to earn money on Instagram then this is where you start. No ifs, ands or buts.

I know coz I wasted 3 years trying. It all starts with followers.

So if you haven't done so already I highly recommend you use my guide to free Instagram followers and building 1,000's and 1.000's of followers all without having to spend any money in the process.

I recommend it mainly because it's the cheapest one out there and it flat out works.

But also because I have tried and tested it myself so I know that it works 100% on accounts that I have built from scratch.

P.S If you'd like to know more about how to get more followers in Instagram, shoutouts on big accounts are a great way of getting a headstart. Here I explain what is a shoutout and how you can get one on my account.

I love this info but I Find it funny that there’s not one link to your Instagram icon on this entire post LOL OPPS

    • Iain Stanley says:

Thanks Toni. Not sure what you mean…? There are 2 ways you can connect with me on Instagram. If you’re browsing on PC they are both in the right hand sidebar. If you’re browsing on mobile, just scroll down to the bottom. If you want to see my accounts you can see a couple here: @eyestarcreations @eyestar_bnw

  • Thea A says:

    Hi Iain,

I’m so glad I found this post, it’s something I have been thinking about for a while. I really appreciate you showing us your personal successes via screen shot, it’s very encouraging to see it can be done.

    I’ve got three questions:

    1) You say that you target different audiences with different accounts, how many should you have. Is it easy to manage them all?

    2) Selling your own products – can you put a link on Instagram or do you have to direct them to your website?

    3) Is it worth paying for sponsored posts on Insta? Have you tried that?

    • Iain Stanley says:

Hi Thea. I’ll answer your questions below:

      1. Instagram gives you 5 accounts from one phone and phone number. You need different email addresses for each but you can access them and switch between them all from the one phone. Some people think 5 is too many to deal with but I don’t really think so. Why? Coz Instagram gives me nearly all my traffic. For free. So I don’t really use Facebok, or Twitter, or Snapchat etc too much. I just focus on Instagram and these days, Pinterest. You can upload a pic once a day to one account. So for example, Monday, account 1, Tuesday, account 2. It only takes 5-10 minutes so it’s easily manageable.

      2. Instagram is quite strict with its TOS. It depends on the company you’re trying to earn money from on Instagram. Some might have been flagged (even if they’re totally legit) while others may be fine. Personally, I like to direct people to my site anyway. That way, I can try to build a relationship and trust with my readers and show them that I’m real.

      3. I’ve never done it, so I can’t say yes or no. But I built my followers to 120,000 in 18 months so why pay when you can do that for free? I have tried Facebook ads and never got any joy. It’s part of the whole reason I turned to Instagram! And Instagram is owned by Facebook so I imagine they’re advertising model is very similar. If you’re interested in how I built my followers and how I targeted them, there’s lots more info here. You can copy everything yourself too 🙂

I am looking into promoting some products through social media. I’m just getting started so I’m happy I came across your article.
Regarding the digital altitude company, with those large commission 🙂 – definitely caught my eye. What products do they allow for promotion? is it e-books, training? what digital product is it?

    • Iain Stanley says:

Thanks Sara. It can be daunting when you’re first starting online but one thing I do definitely encourage is setting up various social media accounts, but only really trying to master one or two. It’s simply impossible (time-wise) to be on top of all of them. For me, it’s Instagram coz I’m visual and love photography. Plus it’s still free, whereas Facebook is pay to play.

With regards to Digital Altitude, it’s two things: one, it’s a series of online education courses that help you understand and master the whole process of earning online. Quite similar to Wealthy Affiliate here but perhaps a little wider in its scope.

And two, Digital Altitude is an entire online business system pre-made for you and ready to sell. Now if you think about all the different parts that are necessary for any kind of business to be successful, there’s a lot. And Digital Altitude has pre-made all the parts for you so you don’t have to learn them yourself. Things like capture pages, sales videos, email follow ups, e-commerce, 1-1 coaching, social media support etc. It’s all done and ready out the box so you don’t have to learn it all.

Then you get the licence to resell it. I think it’s a great system. It’s free to try out for 14 days so you can suss it out and see of it’s a match for your circumstances. Plus those commissions sure are nice 🙂
You can learn more about it here 🙂

  • Nate Glick says:

I guess I need to embrace other social media platforms more after reading this post. Instagram really seems to be a platform that I need to look into more. Also, I may have to look more into your Digital Altitude program. I have heard of it before but just kind of blew it off. You have peeked my curiosity.

    • Iain Stanley says:

Yeah a lot of people overlook Instagram coz they think it’s just pics for teenage kids and doesn’t lend itself to text. That’s not true at all. And besides, a picture tells 1,000 words right? The great thing with Instagram is that you can have 5 accounts from one phone, meaning you can target different niches and subsets all from one, single place. Once I learned that, I went about mastering Instagram. I’d rather master 1 thing, then do it 5 times rather than trying to master 5 different things. You can learn exactly how I built up my Instagram accounts and kept costs at almost zero from this page here

  • Gomer Magtibay says:

Wow! I didn’t know that before. I thought Instagram is just for photo enthusiasts and online marketers should avoid hanging around there. These article of yours has opened to me lots of new possibilities with Instagram.

    I have a question though…

I heard that Instagram is more for mobile devices rathen than desktop and laptop. Can we really not manage our Instagram account via desktop PC?

    • Iain Stanley says:

Yes that’s true Gomer. Instagram is a mobile phone operated app. You can view Instagram on your PC, but not upload photos etc. There are 3rd party operations that can help you do it but essentially it’s made for smartphones.

In relation to your first point, there are many ways to earn money on Instagram. Amd one great thing is tjst most people don’t realize this – so it means there’s less competition 🙂

  • jessie palaypay says:

You mentioned that you can promote a lot of other companies products through the use of instagram.

How would you go about doing this without coming off too salesy? I would figure a lot of people would get turned off by it and start to unfollow if they think that the person was just one advertising billboard.

    • Iain Stanley says:

Hi Jessie, there are two ways I do this. first, I have separate accounts promoting separate things and targeting different people. That way I’m not trying to sell everything to everyone, regardless of whether they might be interested or not. I only promote certain things to certain followers in certain niches. The second way is how you use your pics on Instagram. I use a certain order so that I only promote something directly on 1/6 photos. The other 5 photos are never related to sales or anything like that. I have found using these 2 strategies has worked really well for me. I teach all those things in my Instagram guide, which is available to check out from the main menu above. Cheers, Iain

  • Joshua says:

I’m really liking your site, your content is seriously in-depth! Instagram is my favourite social media platform, I’m just not sure how to apply it to my business yet.

I’m going to buy your guide, as I really think you could help me out! Thanks again for providing such excellent content on how this can help any business and generate revenue 🙂

    • Iain Stanley says:

Hi Joshua, thanks for the comment. My guide talks about how you should approach business, but rest assured that regardless of what niche or area of interest you’re in, Instagram is applicable to anyone. At heart, I’m a photographer, buy I also use Insta to promote art, writing, affiliate marketing. I use the same process on all of my accounts simply because it works and I haven’t found anything better to come along yet. Let me know if you need a hand with anything. Cheers, Iain

    Hello Stanley,

Great article on how to make money using Instagram. I always new social media was a great way to market products, but I didn’t know where to start.

I followed your recommendation and made an account with Wealthy Affiliate. I will try your method and update you on my progress.

    Thanks,
    Eric

    • Iain Stanley says:

Awesome Eric, welcome to WA. I think all the help you’ll get here is the best on the internet by far. and once you start the training, your opportunities become as big as your imagination! Let me know if you need help with anything, especially how to earn money on Instagram. Cheers, Iain

  • Craig says:

    Hi Iain,

Wow! What a brilliant read. Thanks to you I will go and check out Digital Altitude. These commissions look awesome.

I’m guessing since DA is your biggest earner on Instagram, it’s also your preferred method of earning?

I am on Instagram but I struggle to get followers so I will sign up for your free guide. Exciting times ahead hopefully.

    • Iain Stanley says:

Hi Craig, yeah you know Digital Altitude is one way to earn money on Instagram. It’s certainly my biggest earner and I recommend it for people who want to get into earning online but don’t know where, or how to start. Unlike some others, it’s not free. You get a 14 day free (maybe $1?) trial period then after that you decide if you want to move forward with it. The thing I like about that is that you go in with your eyes open. That 14 day period gives you a real chance to take a big long look at it and decide if it’s for you or not. It’s working very well for me so I’d love you to join me too. Cheers, Iain
